Modeling is the process of actually creating the wire frame mesh that constitutes an Object. The geometric mesh is built out of polygons. There are a wide variety of modeling tools used to create an object. You may hear terms like NURBS (Non Uniform Rational B Splines), splines, lofting, extruding, chamfering, beveling, etc.-all of these "tools" essentially are methods of creating polygons for a model. In the end, the model is made out of polygons, and that's what the rendering engine sees.
Whenever possible, CraneDigital models objects from scratch. We do this because the quality of model is paramount to the success of the project (and that's our favorite thing to do). If an existing quality model is available for the specific use at reasonable prices, we will consider purchasing pre-built models, but the process of qualifying the model under consideration is rigorous.
Though there seems to be an abundance of stock models available, very few actually meet the criteria for the specific task at hand. Often times it's actually faster to build them from scratch in our favorite modeling tool rather than adapting and patching up purchased and nearly adequate models. And did I mention it's our favorite thing to do, which means we're pretty darn good at it.
